Young Apprentice Program – Rodrigo’s Professional & Personal Development

The Young Apprentice program at Eco Caminhos consists of training young people for the job market as well as stimulating their personal growth. We look for young people who lack access to opportunities for professional development and seek to help out that demographic. Personal growth improves behavioral choices, relationships with others, and self-knowledge. The training and work experience we give apprentices provide practical solutions for the socioeconomic challenges they face.

Since its inception in 2014, social responsibility has always been a fundamental pillar of Eco Caminhos. The apprenticeship program is a core component of this mission and has benefitted numerous apprentices over the years. Here, Bart Bijen (founder and director of Eco Caminhos) talks a little about our most recent Young Apprentice, Rodrigo.

“I’ve known Rodrigo since he was eight. We met at the children’s shelter. He arrived with his brothers [and] he was one of the youngest in the family, very shy and introspective; he was smart and very interested in learning. He never gave us work. ”

“I have many good memories of our time together. When he contacted us to be part of the young apprentice program, I was very happy and excited to receive someone who I have a good relationship with, especially as he was very motivated to participate in the program. What I can say about Rodrigo is that he has grown a lot in maturity and responsibility, commitment and discipline, since he started in our program. ”

“Here we want to prepare young people for the job market. Rodrigo works in the morning and in the afternoon, taking an hour of English class per week plus the house activities with the volunteers. It is a routine that requires discipline and commitment. And in Brazil , you need this to achieve a career and grow professionally. ”

“Rodrigo is doing very well; we are very happy. We thank the sponsor for the opportunity given to this young man. Without their help, this project would not be possible!”

In the following video, Rodrigo tells us a bit about about his life and his journey at Eco Caminhos through the Young Apprentice program. Watch here:

  • Eco Caminhos Can Help You Overcome Problems | Rehabilitation Program

Eco Caminhos Can Help You Overcome Problems | Rehabilitation Program

João Diogo, a 24-year-old Brazilian, came to Eco Caminhos in November 2020 and in this interview he reports on how his routine on the farm helped him, primarily with issues related to anxiety.

“I feel much calmer, less anxious than when I used to have another routine”, he said.

Our routine involves manual and physical work, a lot of contact with nature, and socializing in much calmer environments than in urban ones. João Diogo is just one example of people who found in Eco Caminhos a suitable place to deal with and help with difficulties, such as anxiety. We believe that the Rehabilitation Program we offer can help even more people, especially in the atypical situation that we live in today.

Check out our interview with João Diogo where he talks about how the program helped him:

Why did you decide to come to Eco Caminhos?

Because Eco Caminhos has a whole other routine and a very positive environment, encompassing issues of nature such as permaculture and bioconstruction (natural building) and sharing experiences between different cultures.

How is your experience in the Rehab program? What activities in your routine help you feel better?

It’s been particularly great! I never imagined that I would be totally immersed in this world, in this context of permaculture, bioconstruction, etc. I had no idea how much good it would do me.

The activities that make me feel better are those that require physical effort. I’ve always liked to play ball and run, to practice physical activities in general. It’s like a tool that was missing for my system to work the way it should. We never stop here, regardless of the area you are in, be it in bioconstruction, agroforestry, or general care of the farm. Not to mention the moments of leisure, with trails and waterfalls outside.

Had you already looked for other ways to work through your issues? How does this rehabilitation program differ from other aids you’ve had?

Yes, I’m always looking. Practicing sports and physical activities has always been very present and has always helped me with my anxiety issues. I have also talked to my psychologist and she herself recommended that I practice physical exercises and other activities.

I believe that Eco Caminhos in particular has the necessary means to make the life of any person more balanced.

Do you think that contact with nature and living in a community is also something that helps you? How?

Without a doubt it helps me! Nature helps me understand the timing of things and living in community makes us share, this exchange makes us grow constantly.

What are the biggest differences you’ve noticed regarding your feelings? Previous feelings that have changed since your time living here?

Without a doubt, I feel much calmer, less anxious than when I had another routine.

Would you recommend Eco Caminhos to other people with issues similar to yours? Why?

Certainly! My experience has been great and it has helped me out a lot. I am also fascinated by the context in which we live and the exchange of cultures and experiences.
  • Birdwatching on our Farm in Brazil – an interview with Jean Paul

Birdwatching on our Farm in Brazil – an interview with Jean Paul

Jean Paul is 57 years old and lives in the Netherlands. In addition to being a consultant, he is a tour guide and bird watching specialist who travels around the world at least 3 times a year. Jean Paul had already visited Rio de Janeiro on other occasions, but for other purposes. This time, he came with the objective of seeing and catalogging the enormous biodiversity that we have here in the region.

In the interview, Jean talks about what brought him back to Brazil, an online social network called iNaturalist, in which people share photos and information about biodiversity from various locations to help each other learn about nature. He says he was intrigued to discover that iNaturalist works very well in Europe and the United States, but in Brazil, more observations are needed to make the program work. So he decided to come here and start a project to develop the catalog for the region; you can see the project and photographs here.

When we asked him what made him choose Eco Caminhos as the location for this experience, he says that at first, he looked for a place close to Pico da Caledônia, one of the highest mountains in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Due to the existence of a huge variety of vegetation, many water springs, and the presence of wild animals, an area of environmental protection was created in its surroundings by the municipality of Nova Friburgo, known as APA do Caledônia. Eco Caminhos is merely 10 km (6.2 miles) from this area and by contacting us, Jean realized that this was the ideal place for this experience.

Rio de Janeiro is considered to be the city with the largest number of bird species in the world. The farm’s surrounding areas, located in Nova Friburgo, have a similarly rich biodiversity. Just watch! Experts point out that the state of Rio is privileged and, despite its small territory, the state has 730 of the more than 1,919 species registered in Brazil by the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee. The country is second in the world in avifauna, only behind Colombia.

We are a self-sustaining eco-farm, located in a region of stunning Atlantic Forest mountains in Nova Friburgo in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Without a doubt, we can provide an incredible experience not only for bird lovers but for all nature lovers! Come and have an Eco Experience with us!

  • Build a Cob Wall

    Build a Cob Wall

There are many techniques and materials for how you can build a wall. Most people are familiar with the current conventional methods; bricks, concrete blocks, and drywall immediately come to mind. How you build a wall made of cob, however, is a totally different process. Be sure to familiarize yourself with what cob is and how to make it before you start building your wall(s)!

To build a cob wall, you must first make a base structure. This is essential for supporting the weight of the walls and for keeping them at an appropriate distance from the ground’s humidity. That means your base needs to be at least 20 cm tall. To be clear, that’s the absolute minimum – the higher the humidity is, the higher the base will need to be, too. Here, we will be using stone for our base construction since it is one of the most common, resilient, and accessible options available.

Generally speaking, stone bases can be built in one of two ways. One such way is the drystack method which requires quality stones in a wide variety of sizes and, more importantly, demands expertise. This technique involves stacking stones without using any mortar to hold the rocks together. In theory, this is as simple as it gets… just a long pile of rocks and nothing else. But in practice, this technique demands a great deal of effort, planning, patience, and skill. We have used this natural building (bioconstruction) technique at our Eco Lodge project, as you can see in the photo below. Though not as environmentally-friendly, the second – quicker and easier – approach is to build your stone base using mortar to fill in the cracks and bind the stones together.

With the base of the wall complete, we can begin “raising the cob.” We lift a handful of cob over the walls and shape it. One hand can be the shape while the other compresses the cob and incorporates it into the bottom layer. It is important to make a large monolith with the cob, avoiding weak connections between the layers. These connections can be made with the thumbs or with the help of a stick.

The top of the wall must be moist so that the next layer can adhere, and the bottom dry enough to support the weight of more cob. Drilling holes in the top of the walls – when you plan to finish the same wall the next day – helps in fitting the new cob. We also use a mixture of sieved clay and water to moisten the walls when they are dry and to help the new layer stick.

It is also important to take care of both sides of the wall, internal and external, so that it grows steadily. Remember: it is always better to make the walls too thick than too thin. The walls can be checked with a leveler and, at the end, trimmed to be more accurate. A machete, a cleaver, a saw, or a shovel can make good tools for this.

After the foundation is made and the walls are erected, trimmed, and dried , it will be practically ready. Building cob walls is as simple and fun as that!
